Introduction to 1 John
The Book of 1 John was written to strengthen believers in their faith and protect them from false teaching.
John focuses heavily on love, truth, obedience, holiness, and assurance of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
“These things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.” — 1 John 1:4
God Is Light
John declares that God is light and there is no darkness in Him at all.
Walking with God means living honestly, rejecting sin, and following truth.
Christian faith is not hidden darkness with religious words. God calls believers into truth and holiness.
“God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” — 1 John 1:5
Confession and Forgiveness
John teaches that believers should confess their sins rather than deny them.
God faithfully forgives those who come to Him sincerely.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.” — 1 John 1:9
Jesus Christ Our Advocate
John reminds believers that Jesus Christ intercedes for them before the Father.
Christ became the sacrifice for humanity’s sins.
“We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” — 1 John 2:1
Do Not Love the World
John warns believers not to become consumed by worldly desires, pride, and temporary pleasures.
The world’s systems are temporary, but God’s kingdom is eternal.
A believer’s heart cannot fully belong to both God and worldly corruption.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.” — 1 John 2:15
Children of God
John describes believers as children of God through Christ.
This identity changes how believers live and think.
“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.” — 1 John 3:1
Love One Another
One of the strongest themes in 1 John is love.
John teaches that true believers should genuinely love others because God Himself is love.
Love is not merely emotion. Biblical love shows itself through actions, sacrifice, truth, and compassion.
“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” — 1 John 4:8
Testing False Spirits
John warns believers to test spiritual teachings carefully.
Not every spiritual voice or miracle truly comes from God.
“Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” — 1 John 4:1
Victory Through Faith
John explains that believers overcome the world through faith in Jesus Christ.
Faith gives spiritual victory over fear, sin, and condemnation.
“This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” — 1 John 5:4
Assurance of Eternal Life
John wants believers to have confidence in their salvation through Christ.
Eternal life is found in Jesus alone.
“He that hath the Son hath life.” — 1 John 5:12
