Introduction to Colossians
The Book of Colossians is a powerful letter written by the apostle Paul to the church in Colossae. Its central message is simple but life-changing: Jesus Christ is supreme over all creation.
Paul wrote this letter to correct false teachings that were trying to mix human philosophy, religious rules, and spiritual mysticism with the gospel of Christ.
“And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” — Colossians 1:17
The Supremacy of Christ
Colossians begins with one of the most powerful descriptions of Jesus Christ in the entire Bible.
Christ is not just a teacher or prophet—He is the visible image of the invisible God.
Everything begins with Christ, continues through Christ, and exists for Christ.
“Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature.” — Colossians 1:15
Christ the Creator and Sustainer
Paul emphasizes that Jesus is not part of creation—He is the Creator of all things.
Everything in heaven and on earth was made through Him and for Him.
“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth.” — Colossians 1:16
This means the universe is not random—it is held together by Christ Himself.
Fullness of God in Christ
One of the strongest statements in Colossians is that all the fullness of God dwells in Christ.
This means Jesus is not partially divine—He is fully God.
“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” — Colossians 2:9
This truth destroys any teaching that reduces Jesus to a mere spiritual guide.
Warning Against False Teaching
Paul warns believers not to be deceived by human traditions and empty philosophies.
False teaching often sounds wise but removes Christ from the center.
“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit.” — Colossians 2:8
Any message that weakens Christ is spiritually dangerous, even if it sounds intellectual.
New Life in Christ
Colossians teaches that believers have died with Christ and been raised into new life.
This means the old sinful identity is no longer the defining reality.
You are not trying to become new—you already are new in Christ.
“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above.” — Colossians 3:1
Putting Off the Old Life
Paul describes practical transformation in daily life.
Believers are called to put away anger, immorality, lying, and destructive speech.
Instead, they are to put on compassion, kindness, humility, and love.
Christ in Every Area of Life
Colossians applies Christ’s lordship to family life, work life, and personal conduct.
Everything is to be done as unto the Lord.
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord.” — Colossians 3:23
Simple Summary of Colossians
Colossians can be summarized in four key truths:
1. Supremacy of Christ — Jesus is above all creation.
2. Fullness of God — Christ is fully God in bodily form.
3. New Life — Believers are made new in Christ.
4. Christ-Centered Living — Every area of life is under Christ’s lordship.
Final Reflection
Colossians lifts the believer’s eyes to the greatness of Christ and calls them to live a life fully centered on Him.
