Introduction to the Gospel of Matthew
The Gospel of Matthew is the first book of the New Testament and one of the most structured accounts of the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
It presents Jesus as the promised King from the line of David, the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, and the long-awaited Messiah of Israel.
Matthew is written with a strong emphasis on prophecy fulfillment, teaching, and the Kingdom of Heaven.
“Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel.” — Matthew 1:23
Who Wrote the Gospel of Matthew?
The book was written by Matthew, also known as Levi, a former tax collector who became one of the twelve apostles of Jesus.
His background in accounting and record-keeping is reflected in the structured way the Gospel is written.
The Genealogy of Jesus Christ
Matthew begins with a genealogy tracing Jesus back to Abraham and King David, proving His legal right to the throne of Israel.
This genealogy highlights God’s faithfulness across generations and His plan of redemption through history.
God’s promises are never broken by time.
The Birth of Jesus Christ
Matthew records the miraculous birth of Jesus through the virgin Mary, fulfilling Old Testament prophecy.
Joseph is reassured by an angel that the child is conceived by the Holy Spirit and will save His people from their sins.
The Kingdom of Heaven
A major theme in Matthew is the “Kingdom of Heaven,” referring to God’s reign through Jesus Christ.
Jesus teaches that the Kingdom is both present and coming, transforming hearts and ultimately the world.
The Sermon on the Mount
Matthew chapters 5–7 contain the Sermon on the Mount, the most famous teaching of Jesus.
It includes the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, and teachings on love, forgiveness, and righteousness.
“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” — Matthew 5:8
Miracles of Jesus
Matthew records many miracles including healing the sick, calming storms, casting out demons, and raising the dead.
These miracles demonstrate Jesus’ authority over nature, sickness, and spiritual forces.
Death and Resurrection of Jesus
Matthew concludes with the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the central event of Christian faith.
Jesus dies for the sins of humanity and rises again on the third day, defeating death.
“He is not here: for he is risen.” — Matthew 28:6
Great Commission
Jesus commands His disciples to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations.
This mission continues today and is the foundation of Christian evangelism.
Simple Summary of Matthew
