Introduction to the Gospel of John
The Gospel of John is the most theological and deeply reflective account of the life of Jesus Christ. Unlike the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), John focuses less on chronology and more on identity.
John’s purpose is clear: to prove that Jesus is the Son of God and that believing in Him leads to eternal life.
This Gospel is built around signs, symbols, deep conversations, and powerful declarations from Jesus Himself.
“But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” — John 20:31
The Eternal Word (Logos)
John begins not with Jesus’ birth, but with eternity. He introduces Jesus as the Word (Logos), who existed before creation itself.
This means Jesus is not only a teacher or prophet—He is God revealed in human form.
Everything that exists was created through Him.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1
Light of the World
One of John’s key themes is light versus darkness. Jesus enters a dark world as its true light.
Darkness represents sin, confusion, and separation from God—but light reveals truth and life.
Where Jesus enters, darkness loses authority.
“I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness.” — John 8:12
The Seven Signs of Jesus
John records seven major miracles (“signs”) that reveal Jesus’ divine authority.
These include turning water into wine, healing the sick, feeding thousands, walking on water, healing the blind, and raising Lazarus from the dead.
Each sign points beyond the miracle itself to the identity of Jesus as the Son of God.
The “I AM” Statements
One of the strongest theological sections in John is Jesus’ “I AM” statements, which directly connect Him to God’s name revealed in Exodus.
Jesus declares:
• I am the bread of life
• I am the light of the world
• I am the door
• I am the good shepherd
• I am the resurrection and the life
• I am the way, the truth, and the life
• I am the true vine
“Before Abraham was, I am.” — John 8:58
Love and Salvation
John emphasizes God’s love as the foundation of salvation. This is most clearly expressed in the most famous verse in the Bible.
God does not merely judge sin—He provides salvation through Jesus Christ.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.” — John 3:16
The Death and Resurrection of Jesus
John presents the cross not as defeat, but as glory. Jesus willingly lays down His life.
The resurrection confirms His victory over death and sin.
“He saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.” — John 6:20
Simple Summary of John
The Gospel of John can be summarized in three movements:
1. Identity Revealed — Jesus is God in the flesh.
2. Signs Performed — Miracles confirm His authority.
3. Glory Revealed — The cross and resurrection.
Final Reflection
John does not simply tell the story of Jesus—he reveals His divine identity. This Gospel calls every reader to believe.
The central question is not just who Jesus was, but who He is to you.
